Continuing from our last story about Gertrude & The Bully: speaking of other relationships, Grace is having one with Seth.
“This town is small.” An exasperated refrain that Grace’s many friends had heard time and time again.
As a young girl, Grace and her family had been relocated. Something that her Crazy Uncle found endlessly funny whenever she visited him. He also reminded her that she was the reason why they were relocated.
Now, there is Seth.
Yes, Grace loves Gertrude. But Gertrude is requiring a lot of effort to love lately. The constant letter writing is driving her crazy. And she wishes for the old days when they actually talked with each other.
“There are days that I just don’t know what to do with her.”
“You can’t give up on her…”
“…I’m not giving up on her, Seth! She’s my best friend.”
They had had this conversation many times. Each one following a late night at one of Seth’s parties. Card games he called them.
But what really interested Grace, was Seth. He was the only one in The Charm Ministry who seemed to be bigger than this place. Just like her.
“What are you going to do?” He asked her.
Through her warm, liquor-induced haze, Grace thought for a while. “Do everything I can to win her back from wherever her mind has gone.”
“When’s she leaving?”
“Annabelle?” Seth asked.
Annabelle glanced over at them from the card table. Her face barely able to mask her curiosity.
“Yes. Annabelle,” Grace replied. Her voice betraying her annoyance.
“I’m done here, Seth. See you tomorrow.” Annabelle quietly got up and walked out of the factory room, leaving Grace and Seth to the evening.
